Color and Pageantry in Seoul’s Temples
on Buddha's Birthday

Destination:       Various Seoul Temples (see below description)
Meet Up Point:   Yongsan Post Office, by bus (ShinYongsan subway station,
stop #429, Blue Line, Exit #1)

This afternoon and evening will be especially memorable. As well as helping to commemorate this special day, you will witness and participate in the color and pageantry which the Koreans lavish on the celebration of the birth of the Buddha. The lanterns, costumes, singing and celebratory dances are colorful and joyful. Don’t forget your camera.

In celebration of Buddha’s Birthday we will be leaving at 1p.m. and visiting several different temples and shrines in Seoul, all of them old and picturesque, decorated for the occasion, which you will have time to explore on your own. Some will be offering traditional snacks. Food will also be available in stalls outside some of the temples.

Our first stop will be Bomun-sa, headquarters of the Bomun Order, the only order of female Buddhist monks in the world and nearby Mita-sa, another female monks’ temple. Next we will visit Gaeun-sa, a monks’ temple, and nearby Bota-sa, a small female monks’ temple, to see its stone Buddha rock carving. Next we will bus to Chilsong-ma (hermitage) to see its white Buddha, a fifteen-foot tall carved rock relief.

From this shrine we will continue on to Bongwon-sa Temple to enjoy the colorful lanterns lit up at night and watch the monks chant and perform traditional ritual dances. We will arrive at Bongwon-sa in mid-performance and leave the temple at 8:40 p.m.  People will be free to take our bus to Yongsan Post Office or to make their ways home on their own.
