During this excursion, we will walk along eastern sections of the Seoul Fortress Wall and explore several neighborhoods along the edges of the wall. The excursion will begin at the Hyehwamun near the Hanseong University Station. From there, we walk along the wall heading south, stopping at Naksan Park. At the park, we will make a short detour to visit Jangsu Village, a troubled redevelopment district that has been the site of several public art projects. Continuing south along the wall, we make another detour to visit well-known public art projects in Ihwa-dong, another neighborhood that was threatened by redevelopment. We will then continue along the wall, making a stop at the new Seoul Fortress Wall Museum, before coming to the end of this section of the wall at Honginjimun (Dongdaemun).

After looking at Honginjimun (Dongdaemun), we will visit the Dongdaemun History and Culture Park, which includes the new (and controversial) Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) designed by Zaha Hadid and Samoo Architects & Engineers. Remnants of the wall and other historical relics have been preserved in the park. From there, we trace the path of parts of the wall that are no longer extent, stopping at Gwanghuimun and walking through Jangchung-dong. The destruction of this part of the wall during the Japanese colonial period opened up areas to the east for rapid development.

The wall begins again in Yaksu-dong and will walk along this section until the pavilion at the top of the mountain behind the Tower Hotel. Yaksu-dong an interesting example of a mixture of genres of residential architecture: detached houses, multi-family units, and apartment complexes. From the top of the mountain, we will make our way to the Beotigogae Station (Line 6) where the excursion will end. The excursion will cover almost the entire eastern section of the Seoul Fortress Wall and will stop frequently to take in views of the city on both sides of the wall.

We will begin the excursion at 13:00 at Exit #4 of Hanseong University Station (Subway Line 4). Comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended.
