The RAS will once again offer you its very popular excursion to the magnificent Seorak Mountains in Gangwon Province. In addition to the usual magnificent beauty of this scenic area, participants will have two options of dipping in to the local Cheoksan hot springs, first night, and to even extend the chill-out to second day, at the Seorak Waterpia This is a Hot-spring resort which features a Spa, hot sauna, 18 kinds or artificial waves, etc. For those who would not take the options and rather enjoy the mountain range, you are guaranteed will enjoy the excursion just as much. Please take a look at its English website: http://www.seorakwaterpia.co.kr/irsweb/waterpia/eng/index.asp.

Seorak, which literally translated means "snow-covered peaks," refers to this gorgeous mountain region as well as to the National Park in which these mountains are found. Seorak-san is Korea's second largest National Park, and it contains Daecheung-bong, Korea's third highest peak. However, for scenic beauty, Seorak -san is unrivaled. Time and the elements have carved the local gray granite into magnificent spires and crags which rise dramatically from the crashing sea coast and soar upwards from the deep valleys, at the bottom of which are emerald pools and sparkling streams of crystal-clear water. These lush valleys are densely covered with pine and hardwood trees, and are home to over 800 varieties of plants and about 500 kinds of animals. In fact, in 1982, UNESCO designated that this area be preserved for its unique botanical features. Truly one of the most scenic areas of Korea, the views are sensational both on clear days and when the peaks are covered with rolling, mysterious fog.

Day 1: November 2, Saturday

We will leave from the Yongsan post office, above Sinyongsan Subway Station (station #429, exit #1 on the Blue Line), at 8:00 am. Please arrive a little early to allow time to pack the bus. After boarding, we will make our way eastward, passing through some beautiful mountain scenery. We then continue to Seorak National Park and then hike to see the Biryong (“Flying Dragon”) Waterfall, which is a beautiful 40-meter long ribbon of waterfall. It is also a scene that best depicts the autumn season of Seorak. The round hike to the waterfall will take about two and a half hours. After the spectacular scenes and beautiful hiking trails, we'll take a short trip to Shin Heung Sa, an old Buddhist temple, before having dinner at the restaurant, then we will check into Sorak-san Excursionist Hotel which has the best view in this National Park. After dinner, for those who are interested you have the chance to take a dip in the Cheoksan local hot springs. This is an option which goes with an additional of 7,000 KW. The pool shall be open till 9:30 p.m. The hot Springs of this region is recorded to be alkaline of pH 9, with an average of 53 Celsius. The water is acclaimed to have wonders for curing Neuralgia and Rheumatism.

Day 2: November 3, Sunday

After an early breakfast at the hotel, the participants for the Hiking option will start the day with a hike to Hundul-bawi (the "rocking boulder"), a boulder twice the size of a man that balances on the edge of a broad, flat rock. It's situated so that even one person can rock it slightly with a heavy push, but dozens of people can't budge it from its perch. Till here the round trip is about 2 and half hours. Energetic hikers are welcome to reach up to the peak of Seorak, all the way to the famous Ulsan-bawi. A round trip (starting from ground level) to the top and back will take around 4 hours. Otherwise, for the moderate hikers, we will turn back from Hundul-bawi and head to Bison-dae, a rock formation and valley that means "flying fairy rock." It's a wide, flat rock surface where the river rapids drain into a clear pool; legend says that an angel ascended into heaven here. This round trip will not take more than 2 hours.

After lunch back at the restaurant, we'll enjoy a panoramic view of the entire area as we ascend to the peaks of Seorak-san on the dramatic and famous cable car-the longest (1,100 meters) and highest (820 meters) single-span cable car link in Korea. We will leave Seorak-san at 3:00 p.m. and will return to Seoul at 8:30 p.m.

For those who chose the option of the Hot Springs Resort- ‘Waterpia’ option, with an additional charge of 46,000 KW you can enjoy the following: Spa Zone, Rainbow Stream, Shark wave, Aqua Zone, Spa Valley, Hot Spring/Sauna, Bubble bath and many others.
