Seoul Street Food Experience
This short jaunt through busy downtown Seoul will explore the rich history and culture of street food in Korea by exploring the Jongno 3-ga and Insadong area. Located in one of Seoul’s busiest commercial and business districts, the area is dense with small stands that specialize in everything from stalls selling quick bites to fuel people on the go to more solid tent restaurants that help the weary denizens of Seoul relax and refuel after a long day. This evening expedition will look at stands both large and small for our evening entertainment and sustenance, each with its own unique take on street food. From gimbab (rice and dried seaweed rolls) to skewered meats and sweet desserts, Seoul’s street food provides insight into an essential aspect of Korean life, culture, and history.
The excursion begins at 6:30 pm, meeting at Jongno 3-ga station(subway line 1) at the entrance of exit 1, to explore the main street before ducking into the alleys of Nakwon Arcade and winding through to Insadong. Along the way, we will stop and sample a wide variety of foods, while also talking about the history and development of street food and the lives and backgrounds of Seoul’s street vendors while exploring the heart of downtown.
Participants should be sure to dress comfortably for an evening of walking and being outdoors, and we strongly recommend comfortable shoes. The cost of food is completely covered by the excursion fee, but we ask that participants with food allergies or other sensitivities please let us know in advance so we can make sure the trip is safe and enjoyable for everyone.
