After leaving Seoul, we will drive straight to Beopchu Temple, one of Korea's foremost Buddhist centers. The bus ride from Seoul to North Chungcheong province will take approximately three hours and pass through some very beautiful scenery. Located at the foot of beautiful Songni Mountain (the name means "renouncing the world"), Beopchu-sa is one of the most-visited temples in Korea. It houses three national treasures and numerous other cultural assets. In addition, this temple contains Korea's largest free-standing Mireuk (Maitreya, Buddha of the Future) image, which towers an impressive seventy-five feet over the sprawling temple grounds. It is said to be the largest free-standing bronze Buddha in Asia. Another highlight is the five-story wooden pagoda which is National Treasure #55. It is the only large wooden pagoda in the country and one of the few wooden structures in Korea that survives from the early 1600's. Beopchu-sa is noted not only for its outstanding architectural features, but also for the natural beauty of its setting. If time allows, those who wish will have the opportunity to hike some way up a steep, but beautiful trail leading to the top of Munjangdae, the highest peak of Songni Mountain.

Beopchu-sa was founded in 553 and the temple was rebuilt and expanded in 776. Like most other temples, it was destroyed by the Japanese in 1592, but it was rebuilt in its present form in 1624. Several of the buildings that now stand on the grounds date from that period, but some stone carvings from the Silla period still exist here. It is said that Beopchu-sa once housed 3,000 monks.

Cost of the excursion is W53,000 for members and W64,000 for non-members. You will need to bring some won for the entrance fee (about W3,500). The bus will leave from Yongsan Post Office (Subway, Line number 4, blue line, Sinyongsan Station #429 exit 1) at 8:00 a.m. sharp and return to Seoul at about 8:30 p.m. Don't forget to pack a lunch for the trip or plan to buy one at the restaurant near Songnisan.
